Mandela's 'heir' banishes French wife who gave birth to his brother's baby

Sydney Morning Herald

Nelson Mandela's grandson and political heir has banished his wife from their home after he discovered that she had given birth to his brother's baby.

Mandla Mandela, 38, was accused of bigamy when he married the teenage Anais Grimaud while still married to his first wife.

Now, following weeks of media speculation that their marriage had ended amid blazing rows, Mr Mandela has confirmed that his wife had an affair with his brother.

"The Mandela family has sent my wife Nkosikazi Nobubele Mandela [nee Anais Grimaud] back to her home after it was discovered she has been having an affair with one of my brothers," he said. "I confirm this affair resulted in a son that Nkosikazi Nobubele gave birth to in 2011."

The scandal is the latest in a series of controversies involving Mandla Mandela, whom Nelson Mandela anointed as his political heir. As well as being a South African MP, he is a chief in the important Thembu tribe and handles much of his grandfather's legacy.

As grandson of the universally revered 94-year-old Mr Mandela, he is also the public face of the family.

He married his first wife, Tanda Mabunu-Mandela, at a traditional ceremony in 2004. Six years later, he married Miss Grimaud, who is from the island of Reunion, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean.

On marriage, she took the tribal name Nkosikazi Nobubele Mandela.

The couple's son was born in September last year and was named Qheya by Nelson Mandela himself.

But the marriage was marred by the fact that Mandla Mandla remained officially married to his first wife.

Ms Mabunu-Mandela fought the Grimaud marriage in the law courts and it was declared unlawful last year.

In a statement released this week, Mandla Mandela said DNA tests confirmed that the boy was not his son but he did not identify which of his two brothers was responsible.

"The revelation of this affair has come as a shock to me and the rest of my family," the statement reads. "It has been made more painful because it is my own brother who is at the centre of the crisis."

Excuse my ignorance, but how can it be told that a baby's DNA is from the Father's Brother and not the Father Himself?

Wouldn't the Brothers essentially have the same DNA?

blankstare

Mandela was the crown jewel in that family. At his passing the extended family will drop from the radar never to be found again. Mandela really was one of a kind.

I would have thought the whole marriage thing improved with each Generation, but it seems to have gotten worse - in this case, LOL.

I honestly thought that Nelson Mandela's unprecedented fame would put the NELSON family on the compass of 'political popularity' for many generations to come. He might well be a "one-hit-wonder" judging by your article lol.

"As well as being a South African MP, he [Nelson Mandela's Grandson] is a chief in the important Thembu tribe and handles much of his grandfather's legacy."

Forget about 'Nelson' - It's all about the Mandelas, LOL.  Nelson Mandela's political influence is multi Generational.

I guess we have to be fair, Nelson is ageing and spent most of his prime years behind bars. His parenting style wanned as a result lol.

Yeah, but it's His Grandson we're talking about here - not His Son.  Surely in the climate and era [i.e modern] He has been brought up in He would have improved on the marriage stakes.  The way He is going about it; it's as if He is living in the dark ages marrying one woman after the other without divorcing the previous wife.  It must be a Indigenous black Guy thing, LMAO.

I didn't realise Nelson Mandela was still alive.  I thought He had passed away a long time ago.

It was the same with Neil Armstrong, most people didn't even realise he was still alive before he passed away. They slip below the radar and are hardly heard from again.

Nelson Mandela has been battling illness for quite some time now. Politically, he has been mute. It would probably stay that way until he passes on.

True @ Armstrong.  I thought He was dead long ago as well, LOL.

As for Nelson Mandela; thanks to His Grandson - He's still got a Lifeline .. or .. a Pipeline, LOL.

LOL

When news first broke, some people genuinely thought it referred to the passing of Lance Armstrong (the cyclist stripped of all former glory over alleged drug use during his prime).

I wonder what Nelson Mandela's children were like, I haven't heard much about em lol. It seems the grandchildren are more popular.

I think the reason why we don't hear much about Nelson Mandela's own Children is because He had so many of them to so many different Women.  They are scattered all over the place - like who the hell is who, LOL.  This Grandson of His is pretty popular because is was personally appointed by Mandela as His Political Heir and is a Traditional Chief of their Tribe.  Furthermore, He's tasty, Hahaha!
